Check out the best American prepper paradises for weathering the apocalypse

In light of the economic downturn, the rise of ISIS and corrosion of civil liberties, it feels like America is teetering on the brink of collapse. Do you know where to go if all hell breaks loose? If not, consider these American prepper paradises for weathering the apocalypse.

The Greenbrier Resort

The Greenbrier is a luxury resort based in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., but it’s not the hotel’s luxurious resources that make it an ideal place to bear the apocalypse. Rather, it’s the giant underground bunker beneath the property.

The 112,544-square-foot bunker was created in 1958 to shelter Congress in the event of a nuclear debacle. The bunker has a power plant, water storage tanks, a clinic with operating rooms, an intensive care unit, a pharmacy and a housing capacity for more than 1,100 people. The location of the facility was revealed in a 1992 article by the Washington Post. Although the bunker is no longer stocked with survival appliances, it is the perfect place to survive a post-nuclear apocalypse.(1)

Vivos survival shelter

Underground shelters tend to conjure the image of a small, sequestered room. Not the Vivos survival shelter. The 13,000 square-foot nuclear bunker is located in the Mojave Desert. It harbors a large television, gym, cozy beds and a year’s worth of gourmet food. The shelter even has a jail if people become hostile from cabin fever.

The Vivos shelter is designed to withstand a 50 megaton blast. It can protect you from whatever form the apocalypse might take, including pole shifts, asteroids, atomic bombs or chemical warfare. Reservations at the Vivos shelter are $5,000 for adults, $2,500 for children and free for pets.(1)

Mount Weather

Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center is a civilian command facility based in Virginia, which Vice President Dick Cheney fled to during the September 11 attacks. It was created during the Cold War as a retreat site for high profile officials in the event of a nuclear disaster.

Mount Weather is an ideal place to weather the apocalypse because it is already divorced from society. It has its own leaders, police, fire department and even laws. It’s extremely difficulty to be granted access to Mount Weather, however. A former engineer of the site has described it as being fully equipped with mainframe computers, circulation pumps, television and radio. It is speculated that the National Gallery of Art has developed a plan to transport highly prized pieces of art via a helicopter in the wake of an apocalypse.(1)

Capitol Visitor Center

You might think Washington, D.C., is the last place you should be during the apocalypse. However, if you can access the top-secret bottom floor of the Capitol Visitor Center (CVC), then Washington may be your safe haven.

The CVC is a three-level, 580,000 square-foot building completely underground on the east side of the Capital. It is rumored that the livelihood visitor center was built below ground to harbor law makers following a global disaster. The entire bottom floor is reserved for Congress and Congress alone.(1)

Site R

The Raven Rock Mountain Complex, also dubbed Site R and the “underground Pentagon,” is about six miles from Camp David. It was created in the 1950s with a call for an undercover control center that consisted of a network of tunnels and shafts to access the surface.

It is rumored that Site R is home to an entire underground city that can withstand a nuclear bomb or an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack. Some people believe that the bunker can harbor 3,000 people, has a vast supply of pre-made meals and is home to a presidential apartment.(1)

Given the list at hand, underground bunkers appear to the best way to survive the apocalypse. Although most of these shelters are designed to withstand nuclear war, they are a safe bet for any apocalyptic scenario, from killer asteroids on one end, to flesh-eating zombies on the other.
